WHEN GUSTAVE EIFFEL REVEALED HIS PLAN TO BUILD A 274 METAL TOWER (320 METERS INCLUDING THE ANTENNA) AS THE MAIN ATTRACTION FOR THE 1889 WORLD EXHIBITION, IT WAS FIERCELY DECRIED BY THE 19TH CENTURY AESTHETICS. MANY PARISIAN CITIZEN BELIEVED THE TOWER WAS NOT MEANT FALL DOWN ON THEM.

Originally built to impress the exhibition visitors, the tower was meant to be a temporary addition to the Paris skyline, but its success made the city of Paris decide otherwise. The Eiffel Tower remained and was the highest building on Earth until the completion New York’s Chrysler building in 1928, soon to be followed by the Empire State Building just a few blocks further down. The Empire State held the title of tallest building for several decades, until it was surpassed by the Twin Towers of the World Trade center in 1972.

Over the past 35 years, skyscrapers in all shapes and lengths haven risen all over the world. With a length of 508 meters, the Taipei 101 in Taiwan is currently record holder, but that won’t last long. The futuristic Burj Dubai will opens its door to a dazzling height of 705 meters in 2008, and will most likely be the tallest building for about 7 to 12 years, while the world is waiting for the completion of Shanghai’s newest and most ambitious project, the Bionic Tower in the Vertical Garden City.

The Bionic Tower is a design from architects Rosa Cervera and Javier Pioz, and will, after completion, rise 1,228 meters into the sky. This modern equivalent of the Tower of Babel will be resting on a 1km diameter base, and house 100,000 people, gardens and even complete forests. In other words, it will be a complete city, all in one giant building. Is bigger truly better? That remains to be seen. For sure it will be impressive.
